Abuela Secret Immunity Elixir

The blend that started it all! As a youngster, my immune system would occasionally get too low.  My abuela (grandmother) always remedied me with her secret.  Fresh lemon from the backyard mixed with raw local honey and a piece of garlic. She would make it as a cough syrup and she would give it to me every morning and night. It was a miraculous recipe that she swore and lived by.  Anytime someone in the household was with a low immune system, she was immediately in the kitchen making this “mejunje”. As years passed by and I moved to the states, I got one of my first jobs in a juice bar. It was there I started a love for health and wellness, and I got intrigued in knowing more about what plants and fruits can help support immunity. So I started incorporating more ingredients to enhance this ancestral recipe. This recipe is what my family now uses every time someone is feeling low immunity. We tend to create it as a tea form, so I thought, why not create it as an easily accessible elixir?

The spicy blend of these powerful plant allies will support you in those times of low immunity,  wet cough and sore throat. She can also support you in increasing your body’s vitamin c levels. This blend composed of:

Lemon: an excellent source of vitamin c and flavonoids, which are antioxidants. Antioxidants help remove free radicals that can damage cells from the body. These nutrients can support the boost of the immune system and wellbeing. 

Ginger: a wonderful warming root that plays an indispensable role in stoking the digestive fire, relieving pain and inflammation throughout the body, and supporting us when we’re compromised with a cold and low immunity. Ginger can relieve pain by increasing circulation and reducing inflammation. Additionally, it is an antimicrobial and can offer support from a sore throat and prevent further infection. 

Turmeric: a wonderful warming root for circulation; warming liver and digestive tonic, anti-inflammatory and immune-supportive. 

Cayenne: This pepper is a great source of vitamins C and E. Cayenne is used in small amounts to support colds, hot body temperatures and flu. Additionally, his disinfectant properties will support sore throat and inflammation. 

Garlic: A powerful, pungent herb, garlic generally supports the immune system, and the life-force or innate vitality that animates the body. It also has particular affinity for bringing healing to the cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive system. Additionally, garlic is rich in antioxidants that help cardiovascular circulation and the lungs.  

Oregano: A nutritive, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, supportive tonic for the digestive organs, and soothing to the heart. He can also aid in upset stomach, colic, and abdominal cramps. Additionally, oregano gently stimulates circulation; it is warming and diffusive, relaxing the muscles and the mind at the same time. This herb makes an excellent addition to this powerful blend.
